Was ist so Interessant? [2018]
The artwork "Was ist so interessant" (German for "What Is So Interesting?") comprises three bodies of work created during an extended stay in Leipzig, Germany. These works were photographed in the communal courtyards of neighborhoods built by the East German communist regime. The residents of these neighborhoods have spent most of their lives under this regime and its pervasive surveillance tactics, one of which was photography as a tool for monitoring and controlling citizens. In this work, I subvert that dynamic, using surveillance techniques to create art rather than exert control.
The first body of work features negatives documenting these courtyards, capturing the essence of these shared spaces. The second work consists of photographs of houses' windows, with each image's perspective shaped by the position of the camera relative to the specific window being photographed. The third work presents black-and-white contact prints of aerial photographs of the neighborhoods, sourced from Google Earth and printed on expired black-and-white paper from the East German company Orwo.
