Sprinzak 32/Type 139 [2017]
Sprinzak 32 / Type 139 is an installation consisting of a photograph and a video work. The still photograph captures a model of a housing project building in Kiryat Shmona, where the artist's mother grew up during the early years of the state. The video documents the process of building the model of this house, constructed by the artist's father based on the photograph. The construction is carried out by following the image's representation, transforming the act into a performance.
This work juxtaposes private initiative with state-driven political agendas, highlighting the contrasts between personal and collective narratives. The still and video mediums serve as tools for exploring and observing the environment, while also allowing an examination of the medium's different manifestations and historical uses.
The work employs conventions of communist art, which was often used for state propaganda, and contrasts this aesthetic with the DIY approach, depicted as a short YouTube tutorial on how anyone can create the model, following the logic of late capitalism. The address "Sprinzak 32" refers to the location of the specific housing project, while "Type 139" is the catalog name of the model used to build this structure in the late 1950s in Israel.
