Evidences (2020)
Collaboration with Harel Gilboa. Series of ten photo books made from images collected online using Google image AI search engine. self publish. 2020
"Evidences" is a series of ten books composed of photographs collected online through Google images search engine, created in collaboration with Harel Gilboa. Each book features ten photographic series, each originating from a different image found under the search term "Evidence." Using Google's reverse image search, we gathered visually and textually related images to each central image. This process freezes new contexts for each image, as created by Google's algorithm at the specific time the series was formed. The size of each book is determined by the proportions of the central image, and the size of each photograph is determined by the resolution of the file.
In 1977, Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan released a groundbreaking photo book titled "Evidence”. The book consists of a collection of photographs they gathered from the archives of U.S. governmental and organizational institutions. Despite the seemingly random and surreal nature of the images in the book, Mandel and Sultan managed to create a fictitious identity with a concrete perspective, almost as if it were produced by a single photographer. Their photographic book was one of the first conceptual photography works of the seventies, demonstrating that the meaning of a photograph is dependent on the context and sequence in which it is viewed.
Unlike the physical archives that were used in Mandel and Sultan's work, "Evidences" utilizes the world's largest photographic archive today: Google images archive. This archive is usually considered decentralized and democratic composed of hundreds of billions of different images uploaded by billions of different people. On the other hand, the images are cataloged, coded, censored, and made accessible by a single, immensely powerful entity that shapes how we understand reality. In this series of books, Google images AI search engine becomes the artist / photographer / curator, generating photographic serieses based on the algorithm's visual analysis capabilities. The contexts created within these serieses produce a coherent logic out of the contradictions between virtual and physical reality and between computerized and human perception.
